Did You Know?
All new security guards (as well as private investigators) in Ontario are required to take the following steps before they can be hired as security guards:

The only way to opt-out of the Emergency First Aid CPR portion of the training is to provide Securtac with a valid first aid/CPR certificate proving you were recently trained by a St. John Ambulance or WSIB-certified instructor.

Luckily, to be eligible for an Ontario security guard license, there are relatively few absolute requirements. You must simply:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be eligible to work in Canada
- Have a CLEAN CRIMINAL RECORD
Before starting your career in the security industry and apply for a license, you must take the following steps:
- Step 1: Take our ONLINE SECURITY GUARD TRAINING COURSE
- Step 2: Pass (or receive an exemption from) our FIRST AID / CPR TRAINING COURSE
- Step 3: Pass the Securtac course to obtain a Ministry-approved special code
- Step 4: Use the special code to register for and pass the ONTARIO SECURITY GUARD TEST
- Step 5: Submit your application with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to obtain your security guard license
As of 2010, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services set in place rules and regulations making it mandatory to complete a Ministry-approved 40 hour Security Guard Training Course before allowing participants to take the Ministry test.

Generally speaking, an Ontario security guard will be responsible for guarding or patrolling a designated area or areas and are charged with protecting people or property. Security guards work in a number of different industries and commonly work in commercial, residential, industrial or even religious environments.

Did You Know?
All security guards are required to identify themselves and carry their license when on duty, presenting it upon request. This even applies to plainclothes security assignments, or security guards working as bodyguards or in a loss prevention capacity. Failure to present a valid license when requested can result in a fine.

How long is the Security Guard training course?
Anyone interested in applying for a job as a security guard in Ontario must complete a 40-hour Ontario security guard course, which includes first aid and CPR certification.
Am I required to retake First Aid/ CPR, if I already have a valid certificate?
No, if you already have a valid First Aid/ CPR certificate not expiring within the next year issued by an accredited Canadian training provider listed under the WSIB, then you are not required to retake the course. However, you would still be required to do the 33.5-hour security guard training course.
Is there a final test after completing all the security guard training course lessons?
Yes, once you complete all of Securtac’s training modules a final test is issued at the end. You must achieve a minimum 65% score. Only after that do we permit our students to write the final test with the Ministry.
